Be Prepared for Spring Runoff

Clear Drainage Routes Now to Avoid Problems Later

Post Date:03/06/2019 2:19 PM

Now is the time to check around the perimeter of your home and remove snow where needed to avoid ice dams later.

Temperatures and precipitation over upcoming weeks will largely determine the amount of flooding which occurs this Spring. There is greater than average potential for flooding this year, however, because of heavy snow cover, saturated soils and greater-than-average frost depths.

Other things which homeowners can do to mitigate flood damages due to snow melt, heavy rains and flooding:

  1. Remove icicles and as much snow as feasible off roofs and eaves.

  2. Clean out gutters.

  3. Elevate items stored in the basement or put them on higher floors.

  4. Elevate/relocate appliances in the basement.

  5. Purchase flood insurance (does not kick in until 30 days after purchase).

  6. Purchase a sewer backup rider on the homeowner’s policy --flood insurance does not cover this type of damage.

  7. Purchase a sump pump (or an extra one as a backup).

  8. Cover egress windows during heavy rains and create an earthen berm or sandbag perimeter to block runoff (sump pumps alone may not be able to keep up with these water sources).

More information is available from Ready Wisconsin: regarding preparedness and planning.  For predictions of flooding potential and other weather information, the National Weather Service ( is a good source, in addition to local news and weather stations.
