WHERE TO APPLY
Residents of the State must
apply before the County Clerk of the County in which either is a resident.
Marriage may take place anywhere in the State.
Out-of-State residents must apply in the County where the marriage ceremony is
to be performed.
A marriage in another state to circumvent the law is not recognized in
Wisconsin.
WHEN TO APPLY
Application must be made at least five days before the ceremony. To
avoid delay, application should be made early in the day. Apply 7 to 30 days
before the wedding.
License is good for 30 days from date of issuance.
The five day waiting period may be waived for good cause by the County Clerk,
upon payment of an additional fee of $10.00 by the applicant. The license can
then be issued immediately following application.
MINIMUM AGE TO MARRY
MALES AND FEMALES - 18 years of age. Between 16 and 18 years of age
BOTH
parents' consent or guardian's consent is required.
Males or females under 16 cannot marry under any circumstances. A Court can no
longer grant special permission in such cases.
Witnesses to the Marriage
Both witnesses must be 18 years of age or over.
PERSONS WHO MAY NOT MARRY
Blood relatives - nearer of kin than second cousins, except when the
female is 55 years or older.
Any person who has not been legally divorced in this state or any other state
for a period of six (6) months.
A marriage may not be contracted if either party has such want of understanding
as renders him/her incapable of assenting to marriage (Section 765.03(1), Wis.
Stats.)
REQUIREMENTS-WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU WHEN APPLYING
Male and Female - both should appear at time of application and present
the following documents:
Record of Birth - Must be certified birth certificate. If born in Chippewa
County and you do not have a copy of your birth certificate, a copy is on file
in the Register of Deeds Office.
Proof of Residence - A Driver's License, ID Card, or other form giving place of
residence. (Where residence has last been established for a period of 30 days or
more)
A copy of the divorce judgment, annulment paper, or a death certificate must be
presented for the last previous marriage, if any applicant has been married
before.
Social Security Number.
Fee
The fee for the marriage license is $70.00. (cash or check)

AFTER YOU APPLY
Important
General Marriage Certificate Requirements
Unauthorized alterations, such as correction fluid, correction tape,
erasures, write-overs and cross-outs are NOT ALLOWED.
All entries including signatures must be in BLACK INK to insure legible
photocopies and clear images for microfilming.
WHERE TO OBTAIN A COPY
OF CERTIFIED MARRIAGE LICENSE
After the ceremony, the officiant will bring the certificate to the
Register of Deeds to the County in which the marriage took place.
Fill out an application and pick up a certified copy of marriage license
at the Register of Deeds.
NAME CHANGE
Fill out Social Security Card application
Bring certified copy of Marriage License, driver’s license and
application to the Social Security office in Eau Claire
IT IS ILLEGAL TO MAKE PHOTOCOPIES OF MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE/LICENSE
