WisDOT and Chippewa County conducting public meeting to discuss Cobban Bridge Location Study
Department and County will examine detailed study alternatives and identify preferred alternative.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Chippewa County are conducting a public involvement meeting to discuss a location study of the Cobban Bridge in Chippewa County. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the status of the project, the new proposed bridge location, and the impacts to the historic Cobban Bridge. The proposed project detailed study alternatives include replacing the existing Cobban Bridge with a new bridge or removing it for safety reasons.
The meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 17th, 2017, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Chippewa County Highway Department, 801 East Grand Avenue, Chippewa Falls. A brief presentation that will include a discussion on the historical significance of Cobban Bridge is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. As a convenience to the public, the meeting is being conducted in an open-house format. Persons interested in the project can visit anytime during the posted meeting hours.
As required by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, this notice also serves as a formal opportunity for consultation on this project to persons with a concern or knowledge about historic properties (historic structures and archaeological sites) located along this project. Such persons are encouraged to attend this meeting or to provide comments to Fred Anderson as listed below. Additional opportunities for identified Section 106 stakeholders will be made available to consult on effects to historic properties.
The public is encouraged to attend and share comments about the study, ask questions, and provide information that will assist the County in making decisions that affect this river crossing. Various exhibits and maps will be available for review. Project staff will be available to answer questions and discuss the study during the meeting.

New Vehicle Height Restriction for Cobban Bridge
Chippewa County is lowering the vertical clearance on Cobban Bridge. Starting on May 11, 2017 vehicles taller than 8 feet will not be able to cross Cobban Bridge. This restriction is being implemented to keep oversized and overweight vehicles off the bridge for safety reasons and to extend the life of the structure. Cobban Bridge is currently also restricted to one way traffic, a speed limit of 5 miles per hour, and a weight limit of 6 tons (one car at a time).
Chippewa County, in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, held public involvement meetings on January 5th and 6th, 2016 in Cornell and Chippewa Falls to discuss a location study of the Cobban Bridge. The purpose of these meetings was to discuss detailed study alternatives and their impacts, and the selection of a preferred alternative.

On March 8, 2016 the Chippewa County Board of Supervisors voted to endorse Preferred Alternative 1B Modified for the replacement of the Cobban Bridge as shown in the following link to the adopted resolution.
