The problem, which caused the range to be closed, were that projectiles had been leaving the range and endangering the safety of residents who live close by the range. The berms (earthen barriers) are only 16 feet high and need to be brought up to 25 feet for a distance of almost 100 yards. A bullet catcher, made of steel, must then be erected on top of the 25-foot high berms. Eye brow barriers must be placed above the firearms stations to also insure that bullets cannot escape the range. All of these improvements have been mandated by the DNR and need to be completed to meet NRA safety standards before the range can be reopened for firearms.

Vandalism mess

The present firearms shelter will be removed and a new firearms shelter, using the NRA design, will be constructed with a concrete pad and wooden firearms benches. Additionally, safety fencing will be installed and a Range Safety Officer shelter will be constructed near the firing line.

A second benefit of the range has been the ability for law enforcement, like our county Sheriff’s Department, to train. The firearms range has become a focal part for the public and law enforcement to train and is a huge asset for the people of Chippewa County.
