Chippewa County Seeks Public Input Regarding a Request to Increase Motor Vehicle Access to the County Forest in the Town of Birch Creek

  • Date: 02/01/2018 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM
  • Introduction: The Chippewa County Land Conservation & Forest Management Committee has received a citizen request to open gates that currently restrict motorized access to a 3.2 mile-long secondary road in the county forest that is commonly referred to as the Tealey Creek Game Loop.

The Chippewa County Land Conservation & Forest Management Committee has received a citizen request to open gates that currently restrict motorized access to a 3.2 mile-long secondary road in the county forest that is commonly referred to as the Tealey Creek Game Loop.

The gates under consideration are located where the County Forest ATV Trail and State Snowmobile Trail 27 intersect 300th Avenue, east of County Highway E.

Motorized access to the Tealey Creek Game Loop is currently prohibited under the 2006-2020 County Forest Comprehensive Land Use Plan (Plan), except for limited-term ATV use by disabled hunters.  Approval of the requested use would be a change in current policy and would require a Plan amendment.  Plan amendments require public input and the approval of the County Board and Department of Natural Resources.

As part of the Plan amendment process, Chippewa County Land Conservation & Forest Management Department staff will provide interested citizens with information regarding the purpose and will conduct two public informational hearings.

On February 1, staff will present maps and relevant information relating to landscape characteristics, land use, and management considerations.  On February 15, staff will report on the public testimony received and present preliminary technical analysis.  Both public informational hearings will be held in room 302 of the Chippewa County Courthouse, beginning at 7:00pm and will provide opportunity for formal public comment.

The Public testimony and a staff report will be presented to the Land Conservation & Forest Management Committee at their meeting on February 21 at 4:30 pm in room 302 of the Courthouse.  A final public hearing on any proposed Plan amendments has been scheduled to be held on March 21.

For additional information,  please contact Michael E. Dahlby, County Forest Administrator, at (715) 726-7921.
